NEW YORK (AP) -- Authorities say a fugitive sought in an Ohio homicide is in custody after showing up at a New York City church and asking to make a confession.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Wednesday that St. Francis of Assisi church called police after Jonathan Smith approached clergy Monday.

The spokesman had no information on what Smith told clergy. He says that after officers showed up, the suspect made statements about the slaying of his girlfriend.

Darlene Hart's body was found July 14 in a Columbus home that was on fire. Police there said they were investigating the death as a homicide and called Smith a suspect.

The name of his attorney was not immediately known. A man answering the phone at the church Wednesday declined to comment.
