With just two buildings and a population of two people, it's one of the smallest towns in the United States.

But Garryowen, Montana sits on the historic reservation where General Custer made his infamous 'last stand' against the Lakota, North Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Native America, lead by the leader of the Lakota, Crazy Horse.

Custer famously underestimated the size of the Native American encampment and all his column were killed.

Included in the auction is the Town Hall which houses a sandwich shop and post office, as well as another building with office space, picnic grounds and mature trees. There is also a petrol station.

Garryowen was named after the Irish marching song of Custer's 7th Cavalry.

It is also home to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, alleged to hold the remains of one of Custer's cavalrymen killed during the battle in 1876.

Being auctioned separately is the Elizabeth Bacon-Custer Manuscript Collection, a compilation of unpublished documents relating to the life and times of the Custer family.

The sale will be conducted in the town by Williams & Williams but anyone in the world can follow the auction online and put in their own bid, providing the $250,000 deposit has been paid in advance.

Garryowen lies in southern Montana, just off US Interstate 90.
