One of the most notorious moments in French sporting history - footballer Zinedine Zidane's headbutt on Italian Marco Materazzi - has been immortalised in bronze.

The five-metre high statue, on display in Paris, shows the moment France's former captain lunged at Materazzi's chest during extra-time in the 2006 World Cup final.

Midfielder Zidane, of Algerian descent, was sent-off for the headbutt and never played international football again.

Zidane said he headbutted Materazzi because of insulting comments the player made to him on the pitch.

The statue, by Algerian artist Adel Abdessemed, is being exhibited in front of the Pompidou centre.

It will remain on display until January 7 next year.
