An 82-year-old woman has been rescued after being stuck in a muddy bog for over 24 hours with her trusty dog by her side.

The pensioner was forced to endure a night of heavy rain and gale force winds after reportedly falling head first down a bank into undergrowth.

The unnamed woman had not been seen since leaving her house in Ventnor on the Isle of Wight on Tuesday when the alarm was raised around 3:30pm on Wednesday. She had failed to turn up for a hairdresser's appointment.

A full-scale search and rescue operation was launched by Hampshire Constabulary to locate the woman, who was believed to be walking her dog in Pelmham Woods.

Officers on the ground, with assistance from a police helicopter, spent over three hours searching the area before finding her in the muddy bog alongside the A3055 Undercliff Drive.

Around 15 firefighters then took 90 minutes to free the OAP.

She was taken to St Mary's Hospital in Newport suffering from mild hypothermia, it was understood.

Darren Toogood from Bright White Images, who was at the scene, said: "Her black and white sheepdog, Monty, stayed by her side providing some heat during the 24 hours."

The canine was safely returned to family members on Wednesday night.
